People are already shopping for next year's move-in, so here's our list while it's fresh. My daughter is nearly through her first semester, and these are the 45 things we actually used, the ones that earned their space, plus a few lessons we learned the hard way (yes, I spelled our own last name wrong on the packing labels).

Before you shop: our 5 best tips

  1. Build everything before you go. It saves a ton of time on the day.

  2. Check the dorm rules. Power strips, headboards, candles: know what's allowed before you buy.

  3. Lay it out to scale. We mapped the room on paper. It calmed an overwhelmed student and made it easy to delegate.

  4. Pre-stick your Command strips. Then just peel the last layer and press on move-in day.

  5. Book dinner ahead. Don't know the area? Ask on the college parent page.

Our closet hack: one tension rod couldn't take the weight of her clothes, and we didn't want to over-tighten it into the drywall. A 'daisy chain' of heavy-duty zip ties from the closet shelf holds it up beautifully.

Back of the door: her locking jewelry organizer has a full-length mirror, so it lives on her exit door for a last check before she heads out.
